In June 2019 it was announced that the See Hear Centre, one of Living Options Devon’s flagship projects, had been chosen by Barnstaple’s Mayor Cllr Alan Rennles as one of his benefit charities. The events, including a quiz night, a valentine ball and a bingo night, organised and hosted by the Mayor were a massive success raising over £4000 for the See Hear Centre.
The funds raised enable the See Hear Centre in Barnstaple to continue offering practical help and support for people with sight or hearing loss. This ranges from the chance to talk about their experiences or seek more information and the opportunity to try a wide range of equipment that will help in daily life.
Teresa Pollard, Fundraising Officer of Living Options Devon said "Living Options Devon would like to give a massive thank you to the Mayor of Barnstaple for selecting the See Hear Centre as one of his chosen charities. The money raised through the Mayor’s events will be used to support people with hearing and sight impairments in North Devon. This service is especially needed under the current circumstances where individuals with disabilities are some of the most vulnerable."
Annually over 6,000 disabled and Deaf people benefit from the activities that Living Options Devon provides, a user-led organisation means it has first-hand understanding of the issues facing disabled and Deaf people. The charity was founded in 1990 by Peter Swain OBE following a life changing spinal injury providing him with an understanding of the many barriers that disabled people face, but even more importantly a deep understanding of the areas of support that could be put into place to enable other disabled people to live more independent and fulfilling lives. This includes training, volunteering opportunities, outreach projects and accessible support services.

Living Options Devon is a well respected user-led organisation which works to ensure that people with disabilities and Deaf people can live the life they choose. Set up in 1990 LOD is a registered charity (Charity N0. 1102489) and a company limited by guarantee (No. 4925281). Based in Exeter and Barnstaple, our charitable aims mean we we can offer services across the South West and share good practice throughout the UK. Being led and run by people with disabilities and Deaf people ensures LOD has first hand knowledge and understanding of the issues facing service users and so is very well placed to increase the influence and voice of Deaf and disabled people. We do this by providing education, training and services which enable people to live the lives they choose.
