Deaf people across Devon had the opportunity to learn about their heritage and culture through a series of workshops and visits to local historical places of interest. The club was run by Deaf people, for Deaf people over 2015/2016. Workshops included were:

  • Time to share experiences of Deaf culture and the aspirations and interests of people taking part.
  • Family Tree research hosted by the Devon Records Office.
  • A visit to Fursdon House and local graveyard to discuss the history of this ‘mini Deaf School’ which eventually moved to the site of the current Deaf Academy, plus access local parish records.
  • Deaf People’s Wartime experiences hosted by Tiverton museum of Mid-Devon Rural life.
  • Local British Sign Language history and development of interpreter services with speakers from The Exeter Academy for Deaf Education and Deafinite Interpreting Agency.
  • A chance to look at Deaf Equipment through the ages with expert input from Devon Council’s Sensory Team and Audiology Department.
  • Accessible Deaf Heritage hosted by Exeter Library.

Further sessions were run to produce storyboards, BSL recorded materials and online resources from people’s learning. If you are interested in the project, please contact Justine Smyth:

About Us

Living Options Devon is a well respected user-led organisation which works to ensure that people with disabilities and Deaf people can live the life they choose. Set up in 1990 LOD is a registered charity (Charity N0. 1102489) and a company limited by guarantee (No. 4925281). Based in Exeter and Barnstaple, our charitable aims mean we we can offer services across the South West and share good practice throughout the UK. Being led and run by people with disabilities and Deaf people ensures LOD has first hand knowledge and understanding of the issues facing service users and so is very well placed to increase the influence and voice of Deaf and disabled people. We do this by providing education, training and services which enable people to live the lives they choose.

We are happy to provide all information about Living Options Devon and its projects in alternative formats by request. Please contact us using the details above.
